Electroplaters do not have a lot of skill, but they do have the right equipment needed for the job. The basic tools required for electroplating are electrodes, plating solutions, electrolyte solution, expansion materials such as inert gas or silica, plating brushes, rollers, and rollers with diamond tips, rollers with diamond balls, and an air compressor or diesel engine. Some electroplaters also work on brass and tin alloys. Electroplaters also have the flexibility to work on silver and copper alloys. Other possibilities for electroplating include working on acrylic, copper, laminate, and wood products. Electroplaters must use quality control and quality assurance methods that are based on good manufacturing practices to be sure that the finished product meets specifications.

Electroplaters can perform other types of electroplating jobs, including surface treatments of plastics and rubber and treating metals with various oxidation agents. With advancements in electroplating technology, electroplaters can make changes in the appearance of metals and plastics without having to redesign the entire production process from scratch. Electroplaters are well-trained in all the necessary techniques for electroplating, including the types of annealing and cold forming that is used to change the chemical properties of metals and plastics to create the desired thickness, hardness, luster, color, and even thickness of electroplated metal objects.
